If you know your wardrobe is not working for you but are unsure what kind of styling help you need, the difference between Personal Style Development and a Closet Edit comes down to one simple question... Do you need help defining your personal style, or do you need help making better use of the wardrobe you already own?
Personal Style Development is designed for someone who feels lost, disconnected from their style, or ready to create a new style direction.
A Closet Edit is designed for someone who already has an established wardrobe and a sense of their style but struggles to create outfits or feels like they have nothing to wear.
Both services can help make getting dressed easier, but they solve very different problems.
What Is Personal Style Development?
Personal Style Development is a styling service that helps you discover, redefine, or elevate your personal style and create a clear wardrobe direction based on your lifestyle, body, preferences, and goals.
It is for the man or woman who feels lost when it comes to personal style and is ready to build a wardrobe that better reflects who they are today.
Maybe you have spent the last several years focused on your career, growing a business, raising a family, or simply taking care of everything else in your life.
Somewhere along the way, clothing and personal style took a back seat.
Or maybe you have never felt like you had a defined personal style. You buy clothes, but there has never been a clear direction behind what you purchase or how everything

works together.
You may also have had a style that once felt right, but the wardrobe you created five or ten years ago no longer reflects your current life.
Your lifestyle has changed.
Your career may have evolved.
Your body may have changed.
Your priorities may be different.
And now you are ready for your wardrobe to evolve with you.
That is where Personal Style Development comes in.
Do I Need to Know My Style Before Working With a Personal Stylist?
No.
You do not need to know your personal style before beginning Personal Style Development. We start where you are.
That may mean starting with very little style direction at all. It may mean rediscovering a sense of style that has been lost over the years. Or it may mean refining a style that no longer feels aligned with the person you have become.
The goal is not to turn you into someone else or dress you according to whatever happens to be trending.
At Styled by Lamara Chenei, the goal is to develop a style that works for your life, your body, your personality, your comfort level, and the way you want to show up.
Throughout the Personal Style Development process, we consider:
Your lifestyle and everyday wardrobe needs
Your body shape, fit, silhouettes, and proportions
Colors that complement you
Your personal preferences and comfort level
Your career, social life, and the places you actually need to get dressed for
The image and feeling you want your personal style to communicate
The pieces that will work together to create a more intentional wardrobe
From there, I create complete, head-to-toe styled looks that give you a clear visual direction.
Instead of standing in front of your closet wondering what you should wear or purchasing random pieces hoping they work together, you begin to have a roadmap for your wardrobe.
The guesswork starts to disappear.
Who Is Personal Style Development Best For?
Personal Style Development may be the right service for you if:
You feel like you have lost your sense of style.
Your wardrobe still reflects an earlier version of your life.
You have never felt confident defining your personal style.
You are going through a career, lifestyle, body, or personal transition.
You buy individual pieces but struggle to create a cohesive wardrobe.
You are ready to invest in yourself and become more intentional about how you present yourself.
You want professional guidance on colors, silhouettes, clothing, accessories, and complete outfits.
You want to take the guesswork out of shopping and getting dressed.
Personal Style Development Is About More Than Buying Clothes
Developing your personal style is not simply about creating a shopping list.
For many of my clients, choosing to invest in their style comes during a season when they are ready to invest in themselves again.
You may be entering a new stage of your career.
You may be becoming more visible professionally.
You may be rebuilding your wardrobe after a life change.
Or you may simply be ready for the person you see in the mirror to reflect the person you know you have become.
Learning to dress differently can feel unfamiliar at first, especially if style has not been a priority for a long time.
That is why support is an important part of my Personal Style Development process.
You are not simply handed recommendations and expected to figure everything out on your own. I am there to provide guidance as you begin putting your new style direction into practice.
The goal is for getting dressed to eventually feel less overwhelming and much more intuitive.
What Is a Closet Edit?
A Closet Edit is an in-person wardrobe styling service focused on creating more outfits from the clothes you already own, editing pieces that no longer serve you, and identifying the specific gaps in your wardrobe.
The Closet Edit client usually begins from a very different place than the Personal Style Development client.
You typically already have a good sense of what you like.
You have an established wardrobe.
You may even enjoy shopping.
Your closet is definitely not empty.
In fact, you might have plenty of clothes.
Yet you walk into your closet, look at everything hanging in front of you, and still think:
“I have nothing to wear.”
You may find yourself reaching for the same handful of outfits again and again.
You continue adding new pieces, but somehow the new purchases are not making getting dressed any easier.
You know you own good clothes.
You just cannot see all of the possibilities anymore.
That is when a Closet Edit can be especially helpful.

What Happens During a Closet Edit?
My primary goal during a Closet Edit is to help you make better use of what you already own.
Instead of assuming that the solution is another shopping trip, we first work with your existing wardrobe.
Together, we:
Review the pieces in your closet
Identify what is working and what is not
Create new outfit combinations
Build complete head-to-toe looks
Find new ways to wear pieces you already own
Identify items that are no longer serving your lifestyle or style
Determine the specific wardrobe gaps that are preventing pieces from working together
Sometimes the missing ingredient is not more clothing.
It is simply a new perspective.
We become accustomed to seeing our clothes styled the same way.
That blouse always gets worn with those pants.
That blazer only comes out for work.
That skirt has been hanging there because you were never quite sure what shoes should go with it.
A fresh styling perspective can completely change how you see the clothes you already have.
How Can a Closet Edit Help Me Stop Buying Clothes I Don't Need?
A Closet Edit does more than create outfits.
It also helps you understand what is actually missing from your wardrobe.
There is a big difference between saying:
“I need more clothes.”
and knowing:
“I need this specific type of shoe because it would complete six outfits I already own.”
Or:
“Adding two versatile tops in these colors would allow me to wear several pieces that are already sitting in my closet.”
That is the difference between simply shopping and shopping with intention.
Once we have maximized what you already own, I can give you clearer direction about the pieces that are genuinely worth adding.
Instead of continuing to purchase clothing because your wardrobe feels uninspiring, you can shop with a purpose.
Who Is a Closet Edit Best For?
A Closet Edit may be right for you if:
You have plenty of clothes but still feel like you have nothing to wear.
You already have a sense of your personal style.
Your closet is full, but your outfit options feel limited.
You wear the same combinations repeatedly.
You continue shopping but still feel like something is missing.
You own pieces you like but do not know how to style them.
You want fresh outfit ideas without replacing your entire wardrobe.
You want to identify exactly what your wardrobe needs before buying anything else.
Personal Style Development vs. Closet Edit: What's the Difference?
The biggest difference is where we are starting.
Personal Style Development | Closet Edit |
You are defining or redefining your personal style. | You already have an established sense of style. |
You need clearer direction about what works for you. | You need fresh ideas for using what you already own. |
You may need to build or significantly refine your wardrobe. | You usually do not need an entirely new wardrobe. |
We focus on your style identity, lifestyle, body, colors, silhouettes, and complete looks. | We focus on creating outfits, maximizing existing pieces, editing your closet, and identifying gaps. |
The goal is to create a personal style roadmap. | The goal is to unlock the potential of your existing wardrobe. |
An even simpler way to think about it:
Personal Style Development answers: “What should my style look like?”
Closet Edit answers: “What can I do with all of these clothes I already own?”
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Need Both Personal Style Development and a Closet Edit?
Absolutely.
For some clients, these services naturally complement one another.
You might realize that you need to redefine your style first and then want help applying that new direction to the clothes already in your closet.
Or you may begin with a Closet Edit and discover that the bigger issue is not your clothing at all—you have simply outgrown your previous style direction.
The right starting point depends on what is creating the most frustration in your wardrobe right now.
Which Styling Service Should I Book First?
Ask yourself:
Do I know what I want my style to be?
If your answer is no, or you feel like your current style no longer represents you, Personal Style Development is likely the better place to begin.
If your answer is yes, but you struggle to put outfits together using the wardrobe you already have, a Closet Edit may be the better fit.
Do I Need to Buy a Whole New Wardrobe?
Not necessarily.
In fact, buying an entirely new wardrobe is not the goal of either service.
Personal Style Development helps you make more intentional decisions about the wardrobe you are building.
A Closet Edit helps you determine how much of the wardrobe you already have can be styled differently before you purchase anything else.
The goal is always to make your wardrobe work better for you—not simply to encourage you to own more clothes.
Is Personal Styling Only for People Who Love Fashion?
No.
You do not need to love fashion, follow trends, or already know how to style yourself to work with a personal stylist.
Personal styling is about creating a wardrobe that supports your actual life.
For some people that means developing a more elevated or fashion-forward style.
For others, it simply means knowing that when they open their closet in the morning, they have clothes that fit, work together, feel good, and make sense for where they are going.
How Do I Know If Hiring a Personal Stylist Is Worth It?
Personal styling may be worth considering when your wardrobe is costing you more time, frustration, or unnecessary purchases than it should.
If you repeatedly buy clothes that do not get worn, struggle to get dressed for important moments, no longer feel represented by your wardrobe, or have plenty of clothing but very few outfits, professional styling can provide direction that is difficult to create on your own.
The goal is not just to improve what you wear.
It is to help you become more intentional about what you own, what you purchase, and how you get dressed.
Still Not Sure Which Styling Service You Need?
You do not have to know exactly which service you need before reaching out.
Start with this question:
Do I need help discovering what my style should be, or do I need help seeing the possibilities in the wardrobe I already have?
If you need to discover or redefine your style, explore Personal Style Development.
If you already know your style but need help getting more from your existing wardrobe, explore the Closet Edit.
Either way, the goal is not simply to give you more clothes.
It is to help you create a wardrobe that makes sense for your life, gives you real outfit options, and allows you to show up feeling intentional, confident, and fully styled.
